The Le Mans 24 Hour Race scheduled for this June is a pleasure to Audi fans across the world. One, because Audi dominates the field, as evidenced by its record 10 wins in 12 races, so it's a sure bet they'll be vying for a podium finish. Secondly, the German automaker is shaking things up, entering the new R18 e-tron Quattro - a prototype boasting a unique turbodiesel engine, AWD, and electric flywheel hybrid technology.
So what is electric flywheel technology? To the non-gearheads out there, it sounds like something straight out of a science-fiction movie, we admit. Basically, advanced electric flywheel technology assists with regenerative braking, and is expected to add up to 102 bph to each of the front wheels on Audi R18 e-tron Quattro prototype. By doing this, the vehicle stores more energy, and can be redirected to help power the engine, making it last longer, which is paramount at Le Mans.
Audi is assured the R18 prototype will stand on equal footing with traditional, non-hybrid cars, so much so that it's entering two other racers at Le Mans, both nearly identical to the new hybrid prototype. The key difference is these vehicles will not have a hybrid powertrain.
There are other hybrid entries expecting to compete for a podium finish at Le Mans, but we here at Audi of Huntington, located at 363 E. Jericho Turnpike Huntington Station, NY 11746 think the new Audi R18 hybrid will be celebrating in the winner's circle.
