            About Huntington, NY:

            Founded in 1653, Huntington is located on the north shore of Long Island in northwestern Suffolk County, with Long Island Sound to its north and Nassau County adjacent to the west.  On April 2, 1653, three men from Oyster Bay bought from Raseokan, Sachem of the Matinecock tribe, a parcel of land that is now known as "the First Purchase."  The land was immediately turned over to a group who had already settled within its boundaries.  The people of Huntington showed their interest in education very soon after the founding and during the February 11, 1657 Town Meeting, voted to hire Jonas Houldsworth as the first schoolmaster. In 1660 the town voted to build a schoolhouse.
